These safety pages provide an overview of the STFC safety policies relevant to visitors. When you hear the fire alarm:
A building warden will meet you outside at the assembly point. Provide the building warden with the names of any colleagues who are missing.
If you discover a fire:
Save the phone number +44 1235 778888 in your mobile phone. This is the number to dial if an emergency happens on site. You can also dial 2222 from a campus phone.
These numbers call RAL Security, who will summon the appropriate emergency responders.
It is very important that you remember to call RAL Security via one of these numbers, rather than dialling 999, 112, or 911. Using the site emergency phone numbers will allow RAL Security to help emergency services reach you as quickly as possible.

Accidents, dangerous occurrences, or near misses should be reported to CLF staff IMMEDIATELY (e.g. link scientist, area safety co-ordinators or group leaders).
In the event of a serious injury or illness, contact RAL Security by dialling 2222 from a campus phone or +44 1235 778888 from a mobile phone. Security staff will alert emergency responders if emergency help is required.
All accidents resulting in an injury must be reported promptly to the CLF (e.g. link scientist, area safety co-ordinators or group leaders). Major incidents should be reported within 12 hours, and all others within two working days.
If an incident occurs that is dangerous, but that did not cause an actual injury, this is a “near miss”. Near misses should to be reported to CLF as soon as is appropriate.
First aid boxes are located in all main areas within the CLF.
If possible, avoid leaving working apparatus unattended.
If equipment must be left running unattended, ensure it is safe to do so, and display a sign or note explaining the shut-down procedure and whom to contact in an emergency.
If you know that you will need to leave equipment running unattended, discuss this in advance with CLF staff.
Use the following guidelines when planning journeys for drivers, especially for users travelling at the end of a long working day:
If you know that you will have to exceed these guidelines, a risk assessment must be submitted in advance.
If you are pregnant, have given birth in the last six months, or are breast-feeding, contact facility staff in advance of your beamtime, to allow measures to be put in place to avoid any risks to your health and safety.
If you or any member of your team are under 18 years of age, contact your link scientists well in advance of your beamtime. Various legal restrictions apply to the types of tasks that may be undertaken by young people and to how they must be supervised.
